National Reconciliation Week in NSW

In NSW, National Reconciliation Week 1996 was launched at the Powerhouse Museum, where Graeme Mooney was the Cultural Officer. Linda Burney, Colin Tatz and Pearl Wymarra were guest speakers. Up until this time, the week had been formerly recognised as the "Week of Prayer for Reconciliation" which was launched in the Bourke Street Primary School on May 27th 1994.

The dates for NRW chosen by the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation (CAR) mark two significant dates - 27th May (the date of the overwhelming referendum victory in 1967) and the 3rd June (the date the Mabo decision was handed down).

NRW was launched in 1996 as a forerunner to the 1997 National Convention organised by CAR in Melbourne to mark the 30th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum.

National Reconciliation Week continues to be held each year, with activities organised in schools and communities by Local Reconciliation Groups, local Councils, schools and other community groups
